These objects were originally installed at the lock on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat (the Dutch Department of Waterways and Public Works). Their function was to prevent ice formation in winter, so that the lock gates could continue to function properly at high and low water levels.

The lock was later taken over by the Province of Overijssel. This meant that the ice prevention function was no longer required and the objects became redundant.
